Joined by Vice President Joe Biden and families of victims of gun violence, President Obama tearfully took to the podium to introduce a new course of action that will reduce gun violence.
According to the Brady Campaign, “Every day, 297 people in America are shot in murders, assaults, suicides & suicide attempts, unintentional shootings, and police intervention.” Of those 297 shootings, 89 victims die. This country, more than most countries across the globe, suffers from mass shootings and acts of violence on a regular basis so much so that we are accustomed to such news reports.
Obama’s new campaign will enforce and expand background checks on gun sales. His campaign will essentially make it more difficult to purchase a gun from both public and private sellers. Along with the support of the public, he is hoping to make gun violence his number one priority before his departure from office.
During Obama’s speech on Tuesday he addressed our history with gun violence, his plan of action, and quoted Dr. Martin Luther king Jr. Obama proclaimed:
“We are not inherently more prone to violence. But we are the only advanced country on Earth that sees this kind of mass violence erupt with this kind of frequency. It doesn’t happen in other advanced countries. It’s not even close.”
